Week 11 Recap

Another weekend of football and netball brought further mixed results, with first up wins, tight matches and the season’s first drawn game. Here’s the recap for Round 11:

FOOTBALL

Totally Work Wear Berwick & Knoxfield Premier Division Seniors

Cranbourne and Woori Yallock have sensationally drawn for the second time in a home and away season in as many years, with a behind to Cranbourne just seconds before the siren levelling the scores. Interestingly, the drawn match occurred almost two years to the same date of when the two sides last drew, with the 2019 match occurring on July 20. Corey Ellison and Kane Thompson each kicked two goals for their sides.

For the first time ever, Beaconsfield have beaten Narre Warren twice in a home and away season to continue their unbeaten run in premier division. Down by six goals at three quarter time, the Magpies put on a brave comeback to be within four points of the Eagles but were unable to pull off what would have been one of the greatest comebacks of the season. Matthew Johnson, Jake Bowd and Jafar Occa all shared nine goals between them while Jake Richardson booted four majors for the Magpies.

Despite kicking three goals in the first quarter and 1.11 for the remainder of the game, Upwey Tecoma managed to hold on against Olinda Ferny Creek for their second win of the season in a thriller at Upwey Recreation Reserve. Tigers rover Bailey Oates worked hard all day with 14 contested possessions while Matt Scharenberg battled hard with 40 possessions in a losing side.

Wandin have claimed their first win of the season in a sensational match at Wandin North Recreation Reserve, beating Doveton by 25 points. The two sides were close together right up until three quarter time with one point the difference, at which point the Bulldogs stepped up to the task at hand and ran away with the win, kicking three goals to none in the final quarter. The win moves them off the bottom of the ladder with Doveton now taking that spot.

Hallam & Baywater Truck Centres Division One Seniors 

Officer have continued their recent patch of great form, winning their third successive match since the competition resumed from the COVID enforced lockdown. This time around the Kangaroos beat Berwick Springs by 83 points with Matthew Clarke and Casey Wassylko kicking three goals each. Luke Smaluch had a great day out with 37 possessions from centre half back while Wassylko also found a lot of the footy with 33 possessions.

Emerald have put themselves back into finals contention with a 22-point victory over Gembrook Cockatoo to move into fifth on the ladder. The Bombers were in control for the entirety of the match to lead at every break and provide the Brookers with a reality check as they head to training this week. Patrick Chin bagged four goals while Jake Pedder once again performed well with 15 contested possessions and nine clearances.

Healesville claimed their second win of the season, again playing Belgrave to move into seventh on the ladder with a 67-point victory at Don Road Sports Complex. The Bloods were in control right from the start to lead at every break and put some confidence back into the club as they attack the second half of the season. Bloods Captain Nick Mende led by example with 36 possessions, eight clearances and seven tackles while Cody Anderson registered 12 inside 50’s.

Seville have recorded one of the upsets of the round, defeating second placed Mount Evelyn by 20 points to keep themselves in touch with the top five sides as the final’s series fast approaches. The hallowed turf at Seville proved too much for the Rovers as they were unable to get the game on their terms, despite the fact they were slowly finding their feet as the game wore on. The victory to the Blues now sets the competition up for a thrilling end to the season.

ATC Traffic Division Two Seniors

The top of the table clash provided Alexandra with a reality check as they were beaten by Kinglake for the second time this season. Despite being in front at quarter time, the Rebels lost control of their early momentum and failed to score a goal for the remainder of the game. The win to the Lakers puts them back on top of the division two ladder with Damian Pywell and playing coach Andrew Fairchild leading from the front with seven goals between them.

Warburton Millgrove claimed their third win of the season over the weekend, beating Broadford by 74 points to remain in sixth on the ladder. The Burras controlled the match from the beginning, with Broadford kicking just two goals. Angus Nelson and Trent Elliott shared five goals between them, while James Iacono finished with 33 disposals and 10 clearances.

Powelltown have recorded another big win for their season to move into equal second on the ladder, defeating Yarra Glen by 91 points. The win provides the rest of the competition with a clear reminder they are one of the teams to beat in 2021, with strong abilities and teamwork a key pillar of their success in winning games this year. Michael Fowkes and Dean Roy shared 10 goals between them. Captain Jarrod Bayliss had another great day out with 33 possessions and 10 inside 50’s while Ben Wratten found a lot of the footy in the ruck.

Yarra Junction scored a win against Yea to keep themselves inside the top four and in contention for the final’s series. Leigh Mccombe scored seven majors to be the leading goal scorer for the Eagles while Ewan Wadsworth had 37 disposals and 14 tackles in his return from a week off. Josh Hammen recorded 26 possessions and eight marks while James Brown had 30 disposals and eight marks.

Kärcher Women’s Division One

As the top team in division one and remaining undefeated in the process, Mount Evelyn were too good for bottom placed Monbulk, with the Rovers defeating the Hawks by 107 points. Captain Isobel Urquhart shone with her leadership capabilities, finishing with five goals in the big win. With just two weeks to go before the conclusion of the home and away season, the Rovers will now focus on getting themselves ready ahead of the finals where they are expected to perform very well.

The match between Pakenham and Healesville was played in an extraordinary set of circumstances, with just one goal kicked in the match for the Lions to secure the win. The Bloods were in front for much of the match, with four behinds to no score kicked right up until the last five minutes of the game, when Melinda Eppel scored a goal for the Lions to steal the win from the away team. The win means Pakenham are set for a big finish to the season as they are now level with Upwey Tecoma on the ladder, separated only by percentage. The Lions will need to roll up their sleeves and do it tough to ensure they can reserve their spot come finals time.

Kärcher Women’s Division Two

Thornton Eildon have made it two wins in a row and their fourth victory of the season, pulling off a one-point win over Officer on the hallowed turf at Starling Road. Sophie Penney and Megan Murdoch were the only goal scorers for their sides in the tough fight, with the major scores coming only in the second half of the match. With two rounds to go, the Shinboners are an outside chance for finals, drawing level on the ladder with Olinda Ferny Creek and Belgrave but down on percentage. They will need to step up and put a big effort in to give themselves every chance of featuring in finals action.

Despite kicking inaccurately with 4.16-40, Yarra Junction returned to the winner’s board over the weekend with a 34-point win over Seville/Woori Yallock at Seville Recreation Reserve. Emily Spicer, Jamee Cousens, Patsy Boxell and Michelle Goldsmith were the goal kickers for the winners while Jami Liddlelow scored the only goal for the combined Seville/Woori Yallock side. Still the side to beat in division two, the Eagles will now go about maintaining their dominant run of form as the final’s fast approaches.

Olinda Ferny Creek have secured the win they needed to remain in contention for final’s, defeating Belgrave by 11 points in a match which took place at Upwey Recreation Reserve. Isabella Strathairn, Phoebe Dixon, Leah Gaissl and Kiah Burgess were the goal scorers for the Bloods while Madison Walters kicked two goals for the Magpies. With both sides level on points on the ladder, they’ll be doing everything they possibly can to ensure they will feature come finals time.

NETBALL

Kärcher Premier A Grade

Olinda Ferny Creek have added another win to their season tally in 2021, this time defeating Upwey Tecoma by 17 points. Jackie Cullimore and Holly Taubert were the goal shooters for the Bloods while Krista Tomlinson and Madison Taylor were named as the best players.

Narre Warren secured a great win over Beaconsfield in their match at Kalora Park, defeating the Eagles 53 to 45. Jemma Osborne, Erin Bell and Gabrielle Dwyer were the goal shooters for the Magpies while Elizabeth Murphy tried her heart out for the Eagles, finishing with 37 points scored.

Wandin grabbed their fourth win of the season to remain in contention for finals, defeating Doveton 66 to 40. Abigail Gedge and Lauren Ewart were the goal shooters for the Bulldogs while Shae Brown, Nitalya Te Haara and Lara Agon scored points for the Doves at the other end of the court.

Cranbourne beat Woori Yallock 51 to 42 at Livingstone Reserve to remain in fifth spot on the ladder. Alanah Hardy and Natalie Sparks were the goal shooters for the Eagles, with Allie Oakenfull and Tara Cecil featuring as the best players.

Berwick defeated Pakenham at James Bathe Community and Sports Complex over the weekend, with the final score showing 46 to 22.

Kärcher Division 1 A Grade

Seville beat Mount Evelyn on their home court at Seville Recreation Reserve to maintain their spot in second on the ladder, with the final score showing 41 to 28. Olivia Ray and Carly McDonnell were the goal scorers with Alexis Tucker and Cleo Minney featuring as the best players.

Healesville secured a win in their match against Belgrave over the weekend, with the final score showing 42 to 35. Samantha Murty and Keely Farrow featured as the goal shooters while Bek Breukers was named as a standout player.

ROC have continued their unbeaten season with another win against Berwick Springs. The final score was 62 to 19 with Dee Dee Deng, Ellie Coutts and Samantha Neil scoring the goals while Brydie Engellenner was also named in the Kangaroos best.

Emerald have continued their great run in 2021 with another win, this time against Gembrook Cockatoo, with the final score showing 66 to 30. Tayla Shannon featured as a goal scorer for the Bombers while Rebecca Allen, Leigh Taylor and Kara Ellis were also named as standout players.

Kärcher Division 2 A Grade

Warburton Millgrove have continued their unbeaten run in 2021, this time beating Broadford. Kirralee Luiyf, Shae Gee and Bianca Daniels were the goal scorers for the Burras while Chelsea Barnard and Selina Fotia also featured as standout players.

Yea are another side in division two to continue their undefeated season, this time defeating Yarra Junction 22 to 17. Nikki Watts starred again as a goal shooter for the Tigers while Alicia McLeod was also named as a standout player.

A tight and entertaining match at Powelltown Recreation Reserve has ended with the home side taking a one-point win over Yarra Glen to keep themselves in the hunt for finals contention. Amy Stanley and Jade Rogers were the goal shooters for the winners while Olivia Caneva and Demi Barber also featured as standout players.
