Seville FNC – 2021 Season in Review

Seville Football Netball Club showed they were genuine contenders in division one with solid seasons in its football program and solid year the netball department.

The senior football side were poised to play finals before the covid lockdown brought the season to a close, with the team finishing fifth on the ladder with five wins and four losses, while the reserves were looking dangerous going into the back half of the season with a solid seven wins and three losses record.

The Blues’ senior on-field success also translated to the league teams of the year, with six of their senior players making the final twenty-two in the Division One team of the year.

The players fortunate enough to be selected were club captain Nathan O’Keefe (who was named as captain), Leigh Williams, Nathan O’Keefe, Justin Myers, James Cecere and Deng Nai whose ruckwork and overhead work was second to none.

Club president Mick Shore was proud of the way his club captain composed himself in a year where he took out the Harold Ramage Medal as division one best & fairest and believes he led his side well.

“Everybody has their own way of leading a side but for Nathan, he leads from the front and his performances translate that,” he explained.

“He was quite sensational this year.”

Seville’s netball program proved once again they are still a powerhouse unit and handled the step up in divisions well.

A grade players Olivia Ray & Erin Baker were highlights in the league’s team of the year, with Ray capping off a magnificent individual season by taking out the leading goal shooter award.

“The netballers have done exceptionally well, the coaching team consisting of Carly McDonnell and Alex Bergamin taking it to another level.”

Looking ahead to the 2022 season, Chris Murphy has been appointed as senior coach who will aim to take the team to new heights.

The clubs home ground affectionately known as the ‘Chip’ will look different come 2022 with the playing surface to be ripped up and levelled out with works hoped to be completed at the commencement of the home and away season.

The club will also introduce an expanded junior program with both an under 17’s and under 19’s side set to take the field in season 2022.

“Our aim is to win premierships, we’re not doing it for a banjo lesson, we want to have a crack at it and stay in a strong financial position next year.”

Shore thanked all players, coaches, members, sponsors of the club and Outer East for their continual support in what has been a trying time.

“The sponsors have been overwhelming with what they have done for us,” he appreciated.

“Additionally, the work that Aaron Bailey, Tony Mitchell and the entire team have done during this period has been amazing in enabling us to be able to play in a safe environment when we were not in lockdown, it was really magnificent.”
