Round Two Recap

The second week of AFL Outer East competition saw fell over the Anzac Day weekend, with clubs across the region taking time throughout the day to pause, reflect and remember those who fought for our freedom. The ceremony that took place at Emerald was a formal event, with the 5/6 Batallion in attendance.

FOOTBALL

Totally Work Wear Premier Division Seniors

Doveton started off their new season in premier division with a three-point win over Wandin at Robinson Reserve. Unfurling their 2019 division one premiership flag before the match, the Doves fought a tough game against their rivals, with the victory coming as a result of the Bulldogs inability to kick straight in front of goal. The final scores were 9.6-60 to 7.15-57. Jake Mullen was a sharp shooter for his side with four goals for the afternoon.

The Outer East ‘Match of the Day’ was struck with wild weather throughout the game, with heavy rain and fog making the conditions difficult for all players at Olinda Recreation Reserve. Despite this, Olinda were still able to come away with the win over Upwey Tecoma with the final scores being 12.15-87 to 6.7-43. Nick Keegan booted four goals for the Bloods while Ben Hinton kicked three at the other end of the ground for the Tigers.

Beaconsfield gave Narre Warren an early loss into the season with a 46-point victory at Holm Park. Inaccurate kicking in front of goal cost the Magpies dearly, with the final score being 13.12-90 to 5.14-44. Eagles captain Jake Bowd got his season off to a great start in front of goal, booting six majors to lead his side home. Brandon White, Nick Battle, Jafar Occa, Jamie Plumridge and Damien Johnston were the other best players to feature for the winners.

An uneventful game took place at Woori Yallock Recreation Reserve, with Cranbourne in control of their match against Woori Yallock running out with a nine-goal win. Marc Holt booted six goals for the Eagles, while brothers Ben and Zac Monkhorst shared five goals between them to provide some highlight in the disappointing game for the home side. The final score was 16.16-112 to 8.10-58.

Hallam & Bayswater Truck Centres Division One Seniors

After having the bye in the first week of the division one fixture, Healesville came out firing to control the match from the start, running out 33-point winners over Belgrave at Belgrave Recreation Reserve. Rod Woodford was a star up forward for the Bloods, booting seven goals while the other best players included Nick Mende, Ennis Muke, William Kristelly-Kelety, Dale Senior and Michael Anson were the other best players to feature. The final score was 14.12-96 to 9.9-63.

A tight match surrounded the proceedings at Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve, where Mount Evelyn made it two from two. The final score was 10.17-77 to 10.15-75. Callum Urquhart, Robert Hartfield and Noah Beamish all shared two goals each while Leigh Williams kicked four goals at the other end of the ground for Seville. The other best players to feature for the Rovers were Luke Inaps, Daimon Kift, Bayley Forbes, Michael Gibbons and Lachlan Fooks.

The match at Officer Recreation Reserve was a one-sided affair, with Officer’s pressure inside their forward 50 zone proving too good for league newcomers Berwick Springs. Despite some inaccurate kicking and wet weather, the Kangaroos defeated the Titans by 70 points. Jesse Longmuir kicked four goals for the winning side while Ben O’Loughlin, Anthony Bernardo, Matthew Rogers, Jake Ingaliso, Daniel Ellett and James Cairns were the other best players to feature. The final score was 13.20-98 to 4.4-28.

Playing as the away team for the second week in a row, Gembrook Cockatoo bounced back from their loss in round one to defeat Emerald by 24 points at Chandler Reserve. Michael Firrito and Jake Pedder each starred for their teams up forward, booting four and three goals. Braden Wood, Leigh Scott, Damien Volta, Lochlan Taylor and Colin Bastow all featured as the best players for the Brookers. The final score was 12.9-81 to 7.15-57.

ATC Traffic Division Two Seniors

Alexandra had a big win against Broadford over the weekend, beating the Kangaroos by 161 points on their home ground at Alexandra Showgrounds. The win now sees them sitting on top of the ladder with a massive percentage margin of 257.8%. The Rebels forward line all had a day out, with their leading goalkicker being Jack Builder with six goals. The other multiple goalkickers for the winners were James Box, Ben Jack, Jason Degabriele, Joseph Daniel and Henry Olsson. The final score was 28.25-193 to 4.8-32.

Yarra Glen enjoyed their first win of the season against Yea, defeating them by 31 points at Yea Recreation Reserve. Heath Chamberlain and Tim Ekers each kicked two goals for the River Pigs while the other best players for the winning side included Ryan D’Argent, Liam Evans, Richard Wyles, Jayden Schille, Cameron Tait and Sam Horsley. The final score was 11.19-85 to 7.12-54.

Kinglake are another team to make it two in a row in the division two ranks, defeating Powelltown by 49 points at Kinglake Memorial Oval on Anzac Day. Damian Pywell and Glenn Robertson starred up forward, kicking five and four goals, while the other best players to feature were William Graf, Bailey Robinson and Riley Kennedy. The final score was 17.16-118 to 10.9-69.

The second Anzac Day match in division two saw a close match up to three quarter time between Warburton Millgrove and Yarra Junction, before the Eagles ran away with it in the final quarter, making it a 55-point victory at Warburton Recreation Reserve. Sam Morton snagged seven goals for the winning side with the other best players including Jesse Bombinski, Ewan Wadsworth, David Johnson, Cooper Holmes and Rhys Wade. The final score was 19.13-127 to 10.12-72.

Womens Division One

Playing on their home turf at Holm Park on a Friday night, Beaconsfield and Pakenham fought a good, contested match, but the Eagles proved too good for the Lions, coming away with a 29-point victory. Katie Angelis was the only multiple goal scorer for the Eagles with two majors while Victoria Liarakos, Lauree Metcalfe, Beth Robinson and Maddison Magri were the standout players. The final score was 6.7-43 to 2.2-14.

Mount Evelyn were too strong for Upwey Tecoma at Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve, beating them by 54 points. Georgia Ploegsma kicked two goals for the Rovers while Beth Cruickshank, Matilda Kelly, Sophia Zappia, Mackenzie Adams and Nicole Akers were the best players on the ground. The final score was 7.13-55 to 0.1-1.

Womens Division Two

Another great game took place at Yarra Junction Recreation Reserve between Yarra Junction and Officer, with the margin often separated by only a single digit, until the Eagles ran away to a 19-point victory. Patricia Boxell was best afield with four goals while the other standout competitors for the winners were Jade Mewburn, Georgia Strahan, Jamee Cousens, Georgia Page, Stacey Mercuri and Cassandra Barlow. The final score was 7.9-51 to 5.2-32.

In their first home game, and second ever match as a football side, Olinda Ferny Creek controlled Seville/Woori Yallock from the start and streaked ahead to claim its first win at Olinda Recreation Reserve. In a match where its inspirational captain Maddi Collins led from the front, Shanae Northy kicked three goals for the Bloods, while Charlotte Yuki, Claire Hyett, Illyah Reid and Stella Thornton also starred for the Bloods. The final score was 9.7-61 to 1.1-7.

A low scoring match took place at Belgrave Recreation Reserve where the Magpies were able to get the win over Thornton Eildon. Melinda Cottrell and Serenity Connolly scored two goals each for the winning side while Yvonne Pleydell, Blaney Murphy, Ishleen Lamba and Sarah Phillips also featured as the best players. The final score was 6.4-40 to 2.2-14.

NETBALL

Premier A Grade

Beaconsfield got their season off to a good start against Narre Warren over the weekend defeating them 48 to 37. Elizabeth Murphy and Bianca Sanzaro scored 38 and 10 points for the Eagles while Jemma Osborne was the Magpies best goal shooter with 26 points.

Wandin got the win over Doveton in their first match of the year for both sides, defeating them 60 to 39. Abigail Gedge and Rebecca Black were the best goal shooters with 50 and 10 points. The best players to feature were Rudy Tidd, Brittany Tait and Madison Rouget.

A great contest took place on the netball courts at Woori Yallock Recreation Reserve, with Woori Yallock coming away with the win over Cranbourne. Despite getting away to a slow start and trailing at quarter time, the Tigers clawed their way back into the lead by the third quarter with the final score being 68 to 56. Mia Sudomirski was the highest goal scorer with 47 points, with Alana Mcgurgan and Brodie West also featuring as the best players.

In a low scoring affair, Berwick defeated Pakenham on their home precinct at Edwin Flack Reserve defeating them 41 to 21. Emma Clarke and Chloe Phillips were the highest goal shooters with 12 points each, while Emily Pupuke scored 10 points.

A tight match engulfed the affair at Olinda Recreation Reserve, with Olinda Ferny Creek beating Upwey Tecoma 48 to 45 points. Melissa Martinov scored 29 points while Brodie Smith and Grace Kelly also featured as the best players.

Division 1 A Grade

Seville came away with a big win over Mount Evelyn over the weekend, defeating them 59 to 30 points at Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve. Olivia Ray was the best goal shooter for the winning side with 37 points while Georgia Marsh got 19 points for the Rovers at the other end of the court.

In another tight match, Healesville got the win over Belgrave at South Belgrave Recreation Reserve with the final score being 49 to 42. Samantha Murty was the best goal shooter for the Rovers with 34 points while Naomi Hargreaves slotted 35 points for the Magpies.

ROC have made it two wins in a row to start their season, easily accounting for Berwick Springs by defeating them 62 to 11 points. Brydie Engellenner and Zoe Callan featured as the best players for the Kangaroos as the side moved into second on the ladder.

Emerald easily beat Gembrook Cockatoo on their home court at Chandler Reserve over the weekend, beating them 49 to 21 points. Tayla Shannon and Kaylah Loulanting scored 33 and 16 points for the Bombers while Rebecca Christie got 13 points at the other end of the court for the Brookers.

Division 2 A Grade

Yea came away with a massive win over Yarra Glen on their home court at Yea Recreation Reserve, with the final score being 53 to 17. The win sees the Tigers move into second position on the ladder behind Warburton Millgrove.

A great game took place at Alexandra Showgrounds with Broadford getting the win over Alexandra. The final score was 55 to 49.

Warburton Millgrove came away with the win over Yarra Junction at Warburton Recreation Reserve, the final scores showing 45 to 26. Kirralee Luiyf and Bianca Daniels were the highest goal scorers for the Burras with 22 points each, while Natalia Petrucev also featured as a standout player.

The match between Kinglake and Powelltown resulted in a big win for the Demons, defeating the Lakers 60 to 11 points. Amy Stanley and Jade Rogers were the best goal shooters for the winners with 35 and 25 points each, while Demi Barber and Olivia Caneva also featured as the standout players.
