Powelltown Season Preview

Men’s Football

There will be a strong buzz around Powelltown still as they look to go back-to-back after breaking a 33 year drought.

They defeated Kinglake by 10 points in a Grand Final that they controlled for a fair chunk of the game.
Both sides finished with 12 wins and had beaten each other twice including the Semi Final encounter.

Powelltown are an impressive team, headlined by a strong forward line; Joel Perry, who booted 74 goals, Michael Fowkes 34 and Garry Sheppard 23.

Powelltown averaged a whopping 14.4 contested marks per game; 44 clearances per game and 17.2 goals per game and a whopping 51 hitouts per game, thanks to star ruck Ben Wratten (Team of the Year).

They have a wealth of talent across the field with Wratten, Josh Johnson, James Ashby, Russel Cowan and Perry all making Team of the Year.

Their biggest win was 205 points against Broadford Yea, where Perry kicked 8 goals. Bayliss and Moreland chimed in with 6 each.

Having five Team of the Year representatives, shows the talent this group has and it will be a hard task taking down the Powelltown Demons.

Netball

Powelltown will be itching to get out there and take another step in 2023, following a brilliant 2022 campaign, which saw them finish second with an 11-1-5 record. They went down by 7 goals to Broadford in the Preliminary Final; a team which they beat twice during the H&A season.

So strong were Powelltown in 2022 that they never lost consecutive games and three of their five losses came at the hands of the very strong Warburton Millgrove.

Their three losses to the Premiers Warburton Millgrove were by 15, 21 and 13 goals respectively, which isn’t a knock on Powelltown, rather a sign of how strong the Burras are.

Amy Stanley shot an impressive 615 goals and was Powelltown’s clear standout.

Olivia Caneva was amongst the best on court in 2/3 of her games and was named GK in Team of the Year. Demi Barber (WD) and Stanley (GS) also made Team of the Year.

Powelltown scored 45 goals per game and conceded roughly 38 goals per game, showing again how strong they are offensively.

Ideally they would like to concede a few less goals per game but they should be right in the thick of the finals action again in 2023.
