Round One Recap

After no competitive sport in our league for 18 months, finally, the AFL Outer East was able to bring local football and netball back to the region. There was a mixed bag of results across the competition, but the big positive of the weekend which everyone can agree on is that it is so great to be able to get out there and do what we love again, participate in community sport.

FOOTBALL

Totally Work Wear Premier Division Seniors

Narre Warren and Olinda played their match from round four on Saturday, with the Magpies using the occasion to unfurl their 2019 premiership flag. Despite a competitive outing between both sides, Olinda were unable to make the most of their opportunities when they went inside their forward line and lost by 82 points, with the final scoreline being 18.15-123 to 5.11-41. Tom Toner and Hamish West were the big goal scorers up forward for them, sharing nine goals between them, while former Collingwood defender Matt Scharenberg kicked two goals for the Bloods.

Hallam & Bayswater Truck Centres Division One Seniors

In their first ever game as a senior football club, Berwick Springs triumphed over Belgrave at Belgrave Recreation Reserve. Despite their inaccurate kicking, a 23-point victory was enough for the Titans to secure third on the ladder in Division One, winning 12.16-88 to 9.11-65. Mitch Van De Loop slotted three goals for the winners while the other best players to feature included Jayden Malek, Riley Hillman, Bailey Delves, Dean Waterstone and Daniel Ousley.

A close contest ended with Monbulk managing to snatch the victory from Officer on their home turf at Monbulk Recreation Reserve. With the final score being 12.15-87 to 12.9-81, Taylor Joyce and Sean Roach kicked four goals each for the Hawks and Kangaroos. Clayton Spooner, Joel Wensley, Lochlan Beecroft, Dylan Werts and Kai Linde were the best players on field for the Hawks.

Mount Evelyn and Emerald fought out a tough contest up until half-time, where the Rovers were able to take control in the second half and run away with the victory over the Bombers at Gary Martin Oval. Inaccurate kicking ultimately cost Emerald, with several wasted opportunities not allowing them to stay in close contact with the home side. Michael Gibbons was a star up forward for the Rovers, booting seven goals to lead his side home 15.13-103 to 7.14-56.

A hard contest was experienced between Seville and Gembrook Cockatoo and the two sides remained within two goals of each other until three quarter time, where the Blues ran all over the Brookers in the final quarter, finishing with a seven-goal victory. With the final score being 17.13-115 to 10.13-73, both sides had formidable targets up forward, with Nathan O’Keefe finishing with nine majors and Leigh Williams with four. Michael Firrito scored five goals at the other end for the Brookers.

ATC Traffic Division Two Seniors

An uneventful affair at Harley Hammond Reserve saw Broadford go down to Yea in their first match in the AFL Outer East competition. In a match where many of the Tigers new recruits put in some starring performances, Corbin Sutherland booted four goals while Harrison Jarvie, Adrian McCarthy, Matt Squires, Cameron Evans and Mitch Ryan also put in great performances for the Tigers. The final score was 14.11-95 to 7.8-50.

The Outer East Match of the Round proved to be a great game to watch, with Powelltown securing the win over Warburton Millgrove on their home turf. Michael Fowkes kicked five goals for the Demons while captain Ben Wratten had 24 possessions and three goals. The other best players to feature were Jayden Mullan, Jack Garthwaite, Russell Cowan and Rhys Chapman with the final score being 14.11-95 to 11.10-76.

The match between Yarra Glen and Alexandra was a great game to watch, with the Rebels overcoming a 21-point deficit at quarter time to secure the win. It was a great contest once Alexandra was able to get themselves back into the game, but eventually got out to a comfortable 19-point margin to get the four points. James Box and Edward Watkin each kicked five goals for the Rebels, with the other best players including Harrison Kelly, Patrick Ferguson, Tom Boots and David Ray. The final score was 15.11-101 to 11.16-82.

Right from the start of the match, Kinglake always had Yarra Junction’s measure, finishing with a 14-point victory. Damian Pywell and Chris Horman snagged six goals between them with Krystopher Douglas, Bailey Robinson, John Burns, Riley Kennedy and Leigh Gilbert featuring as the best players for the Lakers. The final score read 12.9-81 to 9.13-67.

Womens Division One

Beaconsfield took control from the start, holding a comfortable lead throughout the match to run away with a 59-point victory over Upwey Tecoma. Lauren Hojnacki and Ebony Wroe each slotted three goals while Maddison Magri, Beth Robinson, Charlotte Jagusch and Maddalyne Hession were featured as the best players. The final score was 11.9-75 to 2.4-16.

Mount Evelyn were another side who dominated the entire match defeating Healesville by 52 points, despite a low-scoring affair. Kiara Simons, Mackenzie Adams, Madison Foley, Isobel Urquhart, Chelsea Delbridge and Matilda Kelly were the clear standouts for the Eagles while Alycia Olney was the only multiple goal kicker for the winners with two majors. The final score was 7.16-58 to 1.0-6.

In another low scoring but dominant affair, Pakenham came away with the win over Monbulk at Monbulk Recreation Reserve. Roslyn Cook and Lucy Ventham each kicked two goals while Belinda Mcgee, Samantha Bandi and Bianca Moody all shared one goal each. The final score was 7.13-55 to 1.0-6.

Womens Division Two

Yarra Junction easily accounted for Thornton Eildon with a 57-point victory on their home turf. Patricia Boxell was the star of the match, booting six goals to lead her side home with the final score being 9.11-65 to 1.2-8. Ann Ito, Haylee Mackintosh, Jamee Cousens, Stacey Mercuri and Jade Mewburn were the other star players for the Eagles.

Belgrave matched up against newcomers Olinda Ferny Creek who fielded its first ever womens football side on Saturday. In an interesting affair, Belgrave took the win but didn’t score after half time and Olinda only started to hit the scoreboard in the final quarter with the Magpies eventually coming away with the win over the Bloods. Serenity Connolly and Danielle Weisgerber shared five goals between them with the final score being 6.6-42 to 3.5-17.

Officer defeated Seville/Woori Yallock by 51 points at Seville Recreation Reserve with Allison Wartnaby starring up forward with five goals. Tali Verhoeven, Paige Hoskin, Maegan Davey, Kalie Pay and Natalie Holmes were best afield for the Kangaroos. The final score was 8.9-57 to 1.0-6.

NETBALL

Premier A Grade

In the only premier A grade match for the weekend, Olinda Ferny Creek proved too good for Narre Warren defeating them 56 to 48. Melissa Matinov and Jackie Cullimore scored 38 and 18 points for the Bloods while Jemma Osborne and Gabrielle Dwyer slotted 37 and 11 points for the Magpies at the other end of the court.

A tight match engulfed the affair on the South Belgrave court, with Berwick Springs coming away with the win over Belgrave by one point. Charlie Brocks, Victoria Storey and Isabeau Hart were the goal scorers for the Titans while Melissa Davey, Irene Gabell and Krystyna Gabell were the best players for the Magpies.

Seville easily accounted for Gembrook Cockatoo at home winning 58 to 15. In a match where the Brookers never got going, the Blues took the lead from the start and were never headed. The best players to feature were Stephanie McNay, Cleo Minney and Erin Baker for Seville while Alisha Fitzgerald, Laura Christie and Paige Ladner were best afield for Gembrook Cockatoo.

A good match to watch surrounded the battle between Monbulk and ROC, with the Kangaroos coming away with the win by 17 points over the Hawks. Emily McInnes and Mairangi Karaitiana starred for ROC while Tiana Mancarella, Siobhan Munday and Sophie Stubbs were best afield for Monbulk.

In another enjoyable match to watch, Emerald defeated Mount Evelyn by nine points on Saturday beating them 47 to 38. Leigh Taylor, Kaylah Loulanting and Matilda Preston were the goal shooters for the Bombers while Mount Evelyn’s best goal shooter scored 29 points.

A tight clash on the netball court in Broadford was had between the home side and Yea, with the visitors coming out on top 35 to 33. Sophie Hennessey, Rachael Hickey and Abby Cool were best on court for the winners while Ebony Heers, Ally Black and Carina Mills starred for Broadford.

Warburton Millgrove came away with the victory over Powelltown beating them 65 to 30. Bianca Daniels, Courtney Lever and Kirralee Luiyf were best on court for the Burras while Jade Rogers, Hayley Debuf and Georgie Haynes starred for the Demons.

In what turned out to be a blowout, Yarra Junction blew Kinglake away right from the start, beating them 53 to 19 on their home court. Cara Moore, Nicole Wong and Georgia Wilson featured as the best players for the Eagles while Lauren Watson, Thea Nicoalaou and Ashleigh Weir were best on court for the Lakers.

Yarra Glen came away with the victory over Alexandra in the fourth match for Division 2, with the final score being 52 to 35. Katelyn Vanderkolk, Georgia Taylor and Bree Pascoe were best on court for the River Pigs while Shona Gesler and Katherine Quinsee featured as the best players for the Rebels.
