ERWFL/ERGFL REVIEW

Round 2 of the ERWFL had a few teams rectify their not ideal starts to the season in round one, while others had what may be described as a reality check.

In the Premier Division, Mt Evelyn are on the winners list after accounting for Waverley Blues. A three goal to one first term set it up, and Mt Evelyn were able to restrict Waverley to only one goal a half. The margin in the end was 57 points. The multiple goalkickers for Mt Evelyn were Kate Hutchinson (three goals) and Nolene Kingi and Isobel Urquhart (two apiece). Jennifer Anderson, Jessica Smith and Natasha Bennett were among the best for Mt Evelyn in what was a great way to bounce back from a bad round one loss.

In Division One, Upwey Tecoma continued their great start to the season, this time thrashing Heathmont. The Tigers kept the Jets to one goal for the entire match and piled on the scoreboard pain for a 65 point win. The Tigers had 6 individual goalkickers, including Emma Caccetta with three goals, and Jessica Occhipinti, Monica Vantilburg and Ashley Mckern with two apiece.

In the Outer East division, Belgrave were not able to back up their round one win, losing by 26 points to Healesville. It was a much tighter affair this week for Healesville, but they were still able to keep the Magpies scoreless for the entire match. Lisa Mathieson (2), Jaimee Petersen and Alexandra Bryan were Healesville’s goalkickers, while Amy Spicer, Danielle Weisgerber and Katie Bateman were among the best for the Magpies in what may have been a bit of a reality check for the new side.

The only other undefeated side left in the Outer East division is Monbulk, after they defeated Thornton-Eildon by 34 points. The margin was only ten points at quarter time, but just grew and grew from there. Thornton Eildon scored all their goals in the second term through Yolanda Vinycomb. Meanwhile for Monbulk, Kathryn Gow (3) and Rebekah Oleskowski (2) were their multiple goalkickers, while Molly Horne, Claire Scully and Laura Gillard were among their best players.

In the final match of the round, Yarra Junction defeated Upwey Tecoma by 34 points.

In the Under Premier Division, after a great win in round one, things came back down to Earth for Mt Evelyn. They were comfortably beaten by Blackburn. Mt Evelyn didn’t score for the entire game as Blackburn ran away with a 64 point win.

In a similarly one-sided match, the Under 18 Division 1 clash between East Ringwood and Seville ended with an 80 point win to East Ringwood. Seville didn’t score until the final term, and by then the result was well in the bag.

In the ERGFL Under 16 Premier Division, Mt Evelyn accounted for Montrose by 18 points. Jorja Matheson, Sky Wilson and Maggie McKellar were the goalkickers for Mt Evelyn. 

In the Under 16 Outer East division, there were two games with massive margins. Yarra Glen continued their great start to the season, thrashing Olinda – Ferny Creek by 109 points and Emerald defeated Seville by 67 points. The third game was a much tighter affair, with Healesville getting over the line against Upwey Tecoma by nine points. A special mention must be made of Paris Saunders, who kicked six goals in Yarra Glen’s massive win.

In the Under 14 Outer East division, Jetstream accounted for Olinda Ferny after keeping them scoreless for the first half and subsequently goalless for the entire match. It is unclear what has happened in the Monbulk vs Worawa game. It is appears the match has been marked in the system as a draw, although the exact result could not be verified at time of publishing. Despite a three goal to none in favour of Emerald, Mt Evelyn were still able to hold on by 17 points, and Belgrave had a big win against Healesville.

Finally, in the Under 12 Outer East division, there were wins to Olinda Ferny Creek, Belgrave Black and Mt Evelyn.
