GRAND FINAL PREVIEW
Upwey Tecoma have had an outstanding season with just one loss to Olinda Ferny Creek way back on Anzac Day in Round 3. Since then, they have won 11 matches in a row before also beating todays opponents in the Semi Final two weeks ago. The Tigers have been very potent up forward scoring close to 100 points per game along with a strong defence only allowing an average of 10 points per game. The highest total kicked against Upwey this season was by Healesville in their meeting in Round 11. Upwey is quite strong through the mid-field, and they will need to show dominance in this area in this match to ensure victory.
Healesville finished the Home and Away season with twelve wins and just two losses, both of which came at the hands of Upwey Tecoma. The closest any other opposition has gotten to Healesville this season was Olinda last week in the Preliminary Final which was a 33point margin. Healesville have kept Upwey to their two lowest scores this year and will be reliant on achieving that feat again to take the Premiership & Back-to-Back titles. Yes, Healesville are our last Premiership winning Women’s football team, as they beat Monbulk back in August 2019. Healesville also have a good mix of youth and experience which also holds them in good stead for victory.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Upwey Tecoma Coach Mal McKern
“Our group has been developing since inception, over 5 seasons ago, and having made 3 preliminary finals over that time it was great for our group to finally make it through to this grand final. We have prepared well for a tough contest against Healesville this weekend and we are looking forward to the game. We wish Mitch (Healesville coach) and his team all the best for this game knowing that they would probably just like to get to the first bounce now, as we do, and get playing.
Healesville Coach Mitch Hay
“It’s great to see the girls make it to the GF. From the first training session to the final session, to see them develop as a group has been a privilege to coach and a great reward. Upwey have definitely been the benchmark all year, they structure up well and are definitely powerful in front of goal. I feel our 3 encounters have been a mixed bag but I also feel we haven’t played 100% yet, so if we turn up with the right mindset things will definitely be different from 2 weeks ago. Upwey are well coached and a very good side but we are definitely looking forward to the challenge ahead.”
