Season Preview – Broadford

The 2021 season has been a long time coming for all Outer East clubs – but none more so than Broadford Football Netball Club.

The Kangaroos will finally make their long-awaited Outer East debut this month, after joining the league ahead of the cancelled 2020 season.

There will be plenty of unknowns for Broadford in 2021. It’s a new year, with a new league, and a new football coach.

But Club President Bonnie Cavanaugh couldn’t be more excited to watch it all unfold.

“There are a lot of unknowns but we’re embracing it and cant wait to see what it looks like,” she said.

“I think we’re going to come into the league and fit in quite nicely, we’re excited to get in with like-minded clubs and people.

“Even though we are located a fair way away, I think clubs will be able to see how community-focused we are and enjoy their time in Broadford.

“This has been a big refresh for the club and we’re looking forward to seeing some reward for the enormous effort that’s gone into this.”

New Senior Football Coach Russell Humphrey came on board with the Kanagroos in October from the Calder Cannons after also spending time with the Oakleigh Chargers, Hurstbridge and Craigieburn.

Following an impressive season boasting high squad numbers, Cavanaugh expects Broadford to be competitive from the get-go with Humphrey at the helm. 

“(Humphrey)’s set up a new gameplan for the boys and we can’t wait to see it in action. They’ve had some good hit-outs in practice matches,” she said.

“We are looking to move up and rebuild, and that’s what Russell is putting together. We’re coming back from COVID-19 and heading in the right direction.

“I don’t think we’ll stay stagnant at all, it’s onwards and upwards. They are committed to making an impact.

“We’re also really pleased to be fielding a team in the U17s, the squad is looking very healthy and we think it’s an important way to give our younger players that natural stepping stone.”

Broadford’s netballers have also enjoyed a strong pre-season, and head into their Round 1 clash with Yea with confidence. 

“We’ve won all our practice matches in netball and we’ve got really strong leadership,” Cavanaugh said.

“We’re pumped for a new challenge.”

Broadford opens its debut Outer East season against Yea at home on April 17.
